Deputy Director of Elections for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibril has revealed that the original location the party wanted to use for the final rally was the Independence Square.
He stated that they had requested to use the location for the rally, but state officials refused.
He disclosed this in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM with host Kwabena Agyapong.
Mr. Jibril was responding to a question over why the party settled on the location for its rally, which is not far from where the ruling Patriotic Party (NPP) is organising its final rally.
He explained that the NDC planned its final rally and settled on the current location ahead of the NPP’s rally.
He told the host that the NPP was aware that the party would be organising its rally at Madina and yet decided to host its rally at Legon.
“The NDC requested that we hold our final rally in Independence Square. However, they refused our request. We had requested to use the location for the rally due to the anticipated number of attendees. But they denied us. They informed us that it was not a place for political activities. The reason they gave us was frivolous because Aglow International, an NPP affiliate, is constantly hosting events there. They are part of the reason we are suffering.
When the NDC was in power, they prayed against us; their prayer points and activities targeted the NDC government. They stopped praying after the NDC lost power, but now that they know the NPP is about to lose the elections, they have resumed their prayers. They opposed the NDC government. The NPP has made mistakes, but they are still praying for an NPP campaign. If the NDC’s running mate had said that God is someone who sleeps, they would have launched prayer campaigns against us.
He insisted the NDC had advertised their final rally ahead of the NPP, and so the party cannot be faulted for organising its final rally at Madina.
