Leader and founder of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai Odike has proposed that the appointments of Electoral Commission Chairpersons must be done by elections.
He said the appointments of public officials especially the Chief Justice and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), by the president could be inimical to the development of the country in the future.
He made this known in an interview with Ohene Addo on Plan B FM’S “Nkosuo Nsem” where he said
“Our institutions are weak. We need strong men to build strong institutions. We should adopt the Singapore system where the various commissioners vote to elect one of them as EC chair. We need to get persons who have experience with how the system works and have served the commission for so many years,” He proposed
“We need a neutral way of appointing the EC Chair; so that people will have confidence in our institutions, we need to educate the citizenry on the mode of appointments of people to head our institutions. He added.
“We can erase this impression of manipulation of the EC Chair by Presidents if we do the right thing. There should be a review of certain clauses in our constitution and opt for a referendum to deal with this. He concluded.
