Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Osahene Alexander Afenyo-Markin, says they have evidence of alleged secret conversations between government officials and judges aimed at influencing court decisions.
Speaking on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie-Flagship, hosted by Nana Yaw Fianko, he alleged that some judges had been contacted and directed on how to handle certain cases.
“We have evidence of secret conversations with government directing judges on how to rule,” – he said.
Mr Afenyo-Markin also alleged that Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was part of what he described as a “grand conspiracy” against Justice Torkornoo. He further claimed that Justice Buahma was lobbying to become the next Chief Justice.
His comments come amid a growing debate over what some opposition figures describe as selective justice, particularly following the 20-year prison sentence handed to NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The debate has also intensified over the decision to allow selected criminal cases to be heard during the current legal vacation.
On the legal vacation courts, Osahene said the system was created mainly to deal with urgent cases and questioned why some cases were being prioritized while others remained pending.
Mr Afenyo-Markin, a lawyer, said he had no problem with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) investigating him or other NPP members, but insisted that investigations must be conducted fairly and “with a human face.”
He also questioned the need to rush people into prison while bail conditions are made difficult for accused persons.
He called for fairness and equal treatment in the administration of justice, saying the law must apply equally to everyone regardless of political affiliation or social status.
