The General Secretary of the Ghana Concern Drivers Association, Asonaba Ewiradu, has described government’s ‘oil for gold’ policy as a scam aimed at deceiving Ghanaians into believing that they could get fuel at the pumps a bit cheaper that it currently cost.
Speaking on Plan-B FM’s current affairs show dubbed ‘Ebaanosen’ Mr. Ewiradu noted that their association completely does not believe in the aforementioned policy adding that they as an association plan to adjust transportation fares upwards.
He told listeners of the show that members of the association do not feel the impact of the policy because they still purchase fuel at the pumps at fees he described as high and warned that the only way members can cope with the situation is for them to adjust their fares upwards.
He cautioned the government to refrain from deceiving the Ghanaian public with its ‘oil for gold’ police; a policy he says their membership believe is designed to deceive Ghanaians into believing that the government was taking steps to resolve the challenges with the energy sector to ease the pains of Ghanaians.
Mr. Ewiradu told Ohene Kinnah, host of the show that everyone in the country is aware of the fact that Ghana as a country is faced with a lot of economic challenges and wondered why the government would have Ghanaians believe that it could use the states reserve to purchase fuel on the world market.
“Truth is that there is no cheap fuel anywhere in this world. The government says it plans to buy cheap fuel on the international market with our gold. We dispute this claim because there is no fuel on the international market that sold less than the current market price” Mr. Ewiradu remarked.
Continuing he warned against the policy because it would only go a long way to create space for the lack of foreign currenciesand added “the plan to trick our membership into believing this policy will not work”, the General Secretary noted and urged Ghanaians to brace themselves for an adjustment should the association find it expedient to do so.
He continued that they are not happy with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for coming up with ‘oil for gold’; a policy he said was earmarked for failure from the onset.
