We cannot honor a coup plotter’ — Anoon backs Kotoka Airport rename

We cannot honor a coup plotter’ — Anoon backs Kotoka Airport rename
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Anthony Anoon , NDC Communicator for Tema Central, has backed proposals to rename Kotoka International Airport, insisting that Ghana cannot honor individuals linked to military coups.

Speaking on Nkososem, a morning show on Plan B FM, Mr. Anoon said renaming the airport to Accra International Airport is necessary to uphold democratic values and ensure that national symbols reflect the country’s constitutional principles.

He argued that monuments and state institutions should represent unity and democratic ideals rather than commemorate figures associated with unconstitutional takeovers of government.

The airport is currently named after Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a key figure in the 1966 coup that overthrew Ghana’s first President. Mr. Anum maintained that reverting to its former name would better align with Ghana’s democratic journey.

According to him, restoring the name Accra International Airport would not only reflect modern democratic values but also provide a simpler and more geographically representative identity for the country’s main gateway.

Mr. Anoon’s comments add to the growing national debate over whether certain historical names attached to public institutions remain appropriate in contemporary Ghana.
