The queen mothers association of Kwaebirem Municipality in Eastern region have held a press conference at Akyem Kade to throw their massive support for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led government fight against illegal mining (galamsey).

According to the association the activities of these illegal miners have destroyed farm lands, forestry and water bodies across the country including water bodies in their region.

Speaking to Plan-b news at after the presser, the queen mother of Akyem Bomso, Ohemaa Nimaah II lamented bitterly that galamsey has caused severe damages under the watch of male leadership of the Kwaebirem municipality hence, the association’s appeal for a change in the approach to combat the illegality. According to her choosing a female to lead the fight in galamsey would bring a positive result to the area.

The secretary for Queen mothers association who double as the Adankronohemaa, Nana Abena Aseiduwaa II, for her part, noted that the Kwaebirem Municipality hasn’t had a female as its Chief Executive (MCE) under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government before and added that women when given the chance would perform better.

Continuing she noted that the group would be happy if President Akufo-Addo considered appointing Madam Gifty Asare who was the only female candidate during the 2020 general election on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the area’s MCE and quickly pointed out that doing so would bring some form of gender balance in area of government’s appointees.

Some of the queen mothers who were present at the presser added their voices by calling on the president to choose a female MCE for the area to help fight the galamsey which according to them has destroyed the Biremu River.

Concluding they said it is time women are also given the nod to showcase their capabilities in the fight against galamsey now that the men have failed.
