Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Afriyie Owusu Akoto, has announced that government intends to spend about GH¢17 million as compensation for farmers who were affected by bird flu beginning this week.

He detailed that payment will range from ¢10 per chick to ¢80 per bag of feed.

The Agric Minister stated that only farmers who have their certificates of destruction approved by the Veterinary Services Directorate qualify for the payment.

Reacting to this, National Chairman for Poultry Farmers Association of Ghana, Mr. Victor Oppong Adjei in an interview with Bohyeba Afriyie on Plan B FM’s ‘Ebaanosen’  disclosed that they are content with the amount being paid per chick and a bag of feed because it’s not the fault of Government there was flu outbreak but still took it upon it self to compensate them.

He revealed that the 44 million allotted for their sector is not only for compensation but to also employ more veterinaries and purchase vehicles for their movement.

He stated that by the grace of God and support of other Associations they have recorded Nile cases since February.

He also said that they have 20 million Ghana cedis in their possession and only farmers who have their certificates of destruction approved by the Veterinary Services Directorate qualify for the payment and those whose farms were affected in 2021 will receive their compensation and the others will receive their compensation when they receive the rest of the money.

He concluded that all farmers should patiently wait on the Government.
