Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingoes, delivered a commanding performance, thrashing Niger 9-0 in their opening Group B match at the 2024 WAFU Zone B U17 Girls Cup.

The game took place on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Ghanaian Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, Ghana.

In what was initially expected to be a competitive encounter, the Flamingoes proved their dominance, overwhelming their opponents with relentless attacking play.

Captain Shakirat Abidemi led by example, putting in a stellar performance that earned her the Most Valuable Player award.

The victory highlights Nigeria’s strong start to the tournament, underlining their status as one of the favourites to lift the trophy.

Earlier in the evening, the host nation Ghana kicked off the tournament with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Benin. The Black Maidens controlled the game, particularly in the first half, setting the stage for a thrilling competition.

The WAFU Zone B U17 Girls Cup continues to showcase the region’s emerging football talents, with fans eager to see how the tournament unfolds.

Many are predicting a final between Ghana and Nigeria.
