VIP Jeoun petitions police, NRSA to sanction drivers of broken-down vehicles linked to road crashes

VIP Jeoun announces new transport fares effective April 8

Transport firm VIP Jeoun has petitioned the Ghana Police Service and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to investigate and punish drivers who abandoned broken-down vehicles on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.

The company says the unattended trucks contributed to two separate crashes involving its coaches within a 48-hour period in the Eastern Region.

The incidents, which occurred on April 27 and April 28, according to VIP, resulted in injuries, fatalities and damage to property, according to the transport operator.

In a statement issued by management on Thursday, April 30, VIP Jeoun described the situations as avoidable and linked them to negligence by other road users.

“A broken-down truck that had been left unattended and without warning signs on the highway impeded traffic flow and caused an accident,” the statement read in part.

The company explained that in the first incident near Nkronso, a VIP Jeoun coach collided with a heavy-duty trailer after it was forced to stop due to a stationary vehicle on the road.

It added that the driver of the coach sustained serious injuries, including broken legs and fractures, and was admitted to the Suhum Government Hospital.

In a second incident at Asuboi near Nsawam, another VIP Jeoun bus reportedly swerved to avoid a broken-down truck and hit a tricycle and motorcycle, resulting in two fatalities and several injuries.

“VIP JEOUN Transport have invested in three heavy duty recovery trucks but that is not enough respite, given third parties may leave their vehicles unattended on the highway,” the statement noted.

The company is urging authorities to enforce road safety regulations strictly and ensure accountability for drivers who abandon faulty vehicles on major highways.
