Rape victims have been urged to strengthen their cases in court by swiftly reporting their ordeals to the appropriate health and security authorities for proper documentation, says legal practitioner Owiredu Donkor.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s morning show, the legal practitioner affirmed that the reason for the failure of most rape cases in Ghanaian courts was due to the absence of circumstantial evidence to back the claims, hence, prosecutors are left with less than enough proof to advance cases in favor of victims.
“It is quite unfortunate that, most women ignorantly wash away all the necessary evidence for prosecution after suffering rape. They wash away the sperm deposits and clean the wounds which could have helped their cases in court”, the legal practitioner asserted.
Lawyer Donkor also insisted that the delay in presentation of evidence and the culture of stigmatization that is unfortunately attached to rape cases scared away victims from pushing for justice.
He urged victims to brush aside the doubts and protect their evidences for solid and favorable cases against their aggressors.
