The General Secretary of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Dr. K. K Abavare, says the association will meet today, Monday, August 9, 2021, to decide their next line of action after the National Labor Commission (NLC), secured a 10-day interlocutory injunction to compel them to call off their strike.
According to the injunction granted by Justice Frank Aboadwe Rockson, “the respondents herein, whether by itself, its executives, officers, members, agents, servants, employers or other persons are restrained from proceeding with its intended strike…,” portions of the injunction read.
UTAG members have been on strike since the beginning of August because they want the government to restore the conditions of service agreed upon in 2012, which they said, was far better than the current situation.
The association is demanding the implementation of a 2012 Single Spine package, which puts entry-level lecturers on a salary of $2,084.
In an interview on Plan B FM ‘Nkosuo Nsem’ with Ohene Addo, Dr. Abavare said the NLC acted in bad faith, and they will only return to the lecture halls until the government addresses their concerns.
“The Labour Commision acted in bad faith, they are supposed to be the arbitrators responsible for resolving the issue, not to take sides. We are not asking for a pay rise, but we are demanding the restoration of the 2012 Single Spine package. The National Executive Committee will meet today to take a decision on whether or not to call off the strike based on the NLC court development,” he stated.
He stressed that UTAG’s members are extremely disgruntled about the government’s treatment, and although they are not enthused to stay home, they believe that they need to fight for better conditions of service for themselves.
