The University of Ghana has been hurled before an Accra High Court for alleged illegal constitution of the Vice Chancellor’s Search Committee.
Plaintiff, Patrick Ennin, is seeking to injunct and nullify the entire work done by the Committee since it was established in September 2020.
The University’s statutes demand that ‘one year before the post of Vice-Chancellor becomes vacant, or when the post is vacant, the Council shall appoint a search party or committee to propose a successor for the Council’s consideration’.
But with barely two months to the end of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, the University is yet to conclude processes for the appointment of his successor.
There are fears the University of Ghana may encounter a leadership crisis if the reliefs are granted as the mandate of its Governing Council also expired on May 31, 2021, with a substantive one yet to be inaugurated.
