Two soldiers who are part of a deployment keeping peace in Bawku in the Upper East Region, have reportedly sustained various degrees of injuries in an accident at Avenga this morning (26 December).
The accident, according to Asaase News sources, happened as the soldiers undertook peacekeeping patrol duties in the community.
The source told Asaase News the driver lost control of the vehicle after hitting a pothole. It added that the injured troops were assisted by members of the Avenga to the Vineyard Hospital in Bawku where they are being treated.
Both the police and military hierarchy in the region are yet to comment on the accident. Security patrols in Bawku have intensified in the last two weeks following fresh deadly ethnic clashes that have left over a dozen people dead and several houses torched.
The most recent of the attacks was the killing of a Mossi couple in their home by unknown gunmen. The attack on the couple was carried out through a window.
The chaos in the town, characterised by heavy, widespread gunfire, has since displaced hundreds of residents who have fled into neighbouring villages and parts of the region to seek safety.
Meanwhile, the National Peace Council in a recent statement has urged the feuding sides in the conflict to lay down weapons and resort to peace measures to end the age-long conflict.
