An unidentified motor rider popularly referred to as ‘okada’ rider met his untimely death when a truck loaded with cement bags run over him near ‘Ash Foam’, a suburb of Ashaiman Newtown, today, July 1, 2021.
According to Michael Coffie, who was a witness to the gory accident, the Okada rider was riding on top speed heading towards Ashaiman Newtown junction area when the unfortunate incident happened.
Mr Coffie said he saw the Okada rider coming from one end of the road on top speed behind the truck with vehicle registration GM 1485-16 which is loaded with some cement bags.
He continued that the rider realizing that he will hit the rear of the truck, attempted to quicky ride between an approaching taxi and the truck.
“All I realized is that the Okada rider was hit by the taxi and he fell under the truck which was in motion”, Micharl Coffie remarked.
He further stated that the truck crashed the unidentified Okada rider who is believed to be a middle age man, into several parts with most parts of his internal organs scattered around the accident scene.
Regrettably, he said the taxi driver failed to stop as he sped away from the scene to the surprise of eyewitnesses who could not also take record of his vehicle registration number.
When Plan-B FM arrived at the scene, the MTTD team from the Ashaiman Divisional Police Command were at the scene to bring the heavy vehicular traffic due to the accident, under control.
A member of the team explained to Tema base Plan-B FM that they had just arrived at the scene and were yet to gather relevant information about the unfortunate incident and therefore could not speak to the accident now.
He pointed that with such situation they are usually not allowed to speak to the media.
He continued that after their initial investigation they will report to their superior officer who may be in a position to speak to the issue in line with the principle of their profession.
Just before Plan-B FM left the scene, the corpse of the Okada rider had been retrieved from under the truck and conveyed to yet-to-be-known location for preservation and possibly further investigation by the police.
The look on the faces of persons around the scene depicted those of traumatised people who said they were surprised to see such an accident happened before their very eyes.
Some young men and two ladies who are believed to be residents of the area requested that the driver of the truck give them money to buy some alcohol to perform some rites because the truck could not be started after the accident.
They explained that with the nature of the accident, certain rites would have to be performed so as to free the truck from the evil spirits which caused the accident.
Other people around discouraged the driver of the truck from giving them money with the explanation that the group were only trying take advantage of the accident to get some alcohol to drink.
