A paediatric nurse, Mrs. Bernice Asante, a nurse at Tema Urban Hospital, appeared on Plan B FM’s social and lifestyle show “Nyansapɔ Fie” to warn parents about the dangers of chameleon-themed bracelets that are often tied to a baby’s wrist, saying it can harbour harmful bacteria, contributing to the growing concern of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Speaking to host Nana Asabea, Mrs. Asante advised parents to exercise caution and consider alternative accessories, emphasizing the importance of regular cleaning and sterilization of baby accessories.
She also stressed the need for parents to teach children good hygiene practices from a young age.
On the show, Akosua, a pharmacist, echoed Asante’s concerns about AMR. She emphasized the crucial role of hand-washing with soap and water in combating AMR, warning against the dangers of self-medication and parents prescribing medication without proper medical advice.
As the world grapples with the growing threat of AMR, the experts are urging parents to take simple yet effective measures to protect themselves and their children.
”By making hand-washing a habit and seeking professional medical advice, we can play a vital role in combating this global health challenge,” Akosua added.
