A communications member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tema West Constituency, James Tamakloe, has urged government and relevant authorities to take urgent steps to boost local tomato production and support farmers to scale up.
Speaking on Nkosuo Nsem on Plan B FM, hosted by Kofi Sekyi, Mr. Tamakloe said recent developments in the sub-region should serve as a wake-up call for Ghana to strengthen its agricultural base and reduce reliance on imports.
His remarks follow the lifting of a tomato export ban by Burkina Faso, which had previously affected the supply of tomatoes into Ghana.
He called on the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to intensify efforts to support local farmers, stressing the need for policies that will drive self-sufficiency in tomato production.
Mr. Tamakloe emphasised the importance of investing in irrigation systems to enable year-round farming, reduce post-harvest losses, and stabilise supply.
“Rather than depending heavily on neighbouring countries, this is the time to build a resilient local industry that can meet domestic demand,” he noted.
He further described the situation as an opportunity for government to implement sustainable measures that will empower local growers and strengthen the agricultural sector.
