A control team from the Togolese Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday midnight at Aflao on the Togo side intercepted a shipment of 40 tons of maize intended to be smuggled into Ghana, according to MyNewsGh.com

The Togolese government had a tip off from a confidential informant about the activities of smugglers ferrying food stuff and cereals into Ghana illegally covering flour, maize, beans among others.

According to the facts of the present case disclosed by Togo’s the ministers of trade and communication, “the cargo was trying to fraudulently leave the country”.

On May 16, 2022, a Togo Interministerial decree ordered the border officials to regulate the exit of basic necessities and food items from Togo to prevent the population from having any kind of shortage and attenuate the inflationary effect.

“In accordance with the regulations, not only the truck and the stock are seized, but also a criminal prosecution will be initiated against those responsible,” said Kodjo Adedze, Togo’s Minister of Trade and Private Sector.
