Thomas Aryetey, a member of the NDC in the Ayensuo Ano Constituency has expressed optimism about Ghana’s ongoing constitutional review process, describing the current efforts as a step in the right direction.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Ebaanosen programme hosted by Ohene Kennah, Mr. Aryetey recalled that during the administration of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, a Constitutional Review Commission chaired by Professor Kwadwo Afari-Gyan was established to review the 1992 Constitution. However, he noted that the process did not fully achieve its intended objectives.
Mr. Aryetey further observed that despite spending approximately eight years in government, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) did not undertake any significant constitutional review initiatives.
According to him, the return of President John Dramani Mahama has ushered in renewed efforts to review the Constitution through the establishment of a new committee chaired by Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh.
He expressed confidence in the work of the committee, stating that its approach and progress so far suggest it is moving in the right direction. Mr. Aryetey revealed that the committee has already submitted its report to the government and is awaiting its official publication.
He expressed hope that the recommendations contained in the report will contribute meaningfully to strengthening Ghana’s constitutional democracy and governance framework.
