Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, has expressed criticism of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative, accusing it of engaging in political theatrics rather than addressing corruption meaningfully as reported by MyNewsGH on Saturday, December 21, 2024.
Speaking on a television program, Assafuah argued that the committee’s actions lack a genuine anti-corruption focus and instead aim to score political points.
According to Assafuah, the ORAL committee, which was established by President-elect John Dramani Mahama to investigate and recover alleged stolen state funds, is operating without legal authorization.
“This is an unconstitutional body that has no legal basis,” he stated, questioning the committee’s legitimacy.
He also pointed out that Ghana already has robust institutions like the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to combat corruption, making ORAL redundant.
Assafuah further accused the committee of using questionable methods, such as making unsubstantiated allegations and presenting unverified figures.
He warned that these tactics could damage the reputations of innocent individuals and expose the committee members to legal consequences.
“The members of the ORAL team are opening up themselves for defamation suits,” he cautioned.
The MP described the initiative as a populist strategy designed to appeal to public sentiment rather than provide actionable solutions to corruption.
He insisted that any serious fight against corruption should rely on institutions with established investigative and prosecutorial powers, rather than creating what he sees as a politically driven body.
