President of Ghana Union Traders Association (GUTA), Dr. Joseph Obeng has called for a reform in Ghana’s tax regime to ensure compliance and uniformity.
His comments come on the back of a protest by traders in parts of the central business district in Kumasi who locked up their shops against rising exorbitant taxes on their goods.
They lament the pressure to pay income tax, high cost of store rentals and charges from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is having a toll on their profits.
The cumulative taxes they say is crippling their businesses.
Reacting to this on Plan B FM “Nkosuo Nsem” with Aduana Ba, Dr. Obeng said there will be more agitations in the country if their concerns are not addressed
“First we were managing our frustrations and now it has turned into anger, and this is what is showing in the business community. This is just the beginning and others are going to follow, there should be some uniformity in our tax system to ensure compliance. Taxes must be affordable to all and not to the detriment of others.” lamented
There are ongoing negotiations between the leadership he traders and the government.
They warn of possible demonstration if their pleas are not heeded.
