The state is set for an unnecessary showdown between Executive and Judiciary – Gyampo

The state is set for an unnecessary showdown between Executive and Judiciary – Gyampo

A professor of Political Science at the University of Ghana, Ransford Gyampo, has predicted a confrontation between the Legislative and Judicial arms of government in the coming days.

He said this situation would arise due to the ruling of the Supreme Court that seeks to suspend an earlier ruling by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on matters relating to happenings in the House.

” I can anticipate that Speaker Bagbin will put his foot down. The Speaker is also going to tell you that what you have done is contemptuous. The stage is set for an unnecessary showdown between the Legislature and Judiciary,” he said on Key Points on October 19.

Prof Gyampo was reacting to the ruling by the Supreme Court that suspended Speaker Bagbin’s declaration of four seats in the House vacant.

It is recalled that the Speaker of Parliament declared the following seats vacant:

1. Cynthia Morrison, the current NPP MP for Agona West constituency in the Central Region, who has filed to run as an independent candidate.

2. Kwadwo Asante, the current NPP MP for the Suhum constituency in the Eastern Region, who has also filed to run as an independent candidate.

3. Andrew Asiamah Amoako, currently an independent MP for the Fomena constituency in the Ashanti Region, who has filed to run in the upcoming election as a candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

4. Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central), NDC.

However, the Supreme Court on Friday, October 18 directed the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to suspend the implementation of his ruling that declared the four seats in the House vacant.

This followed an ex-parte motion filed by Member of Parliament for Efuttu Constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
