Education Think Tank, Africa Education Watch, is calling for a robust student loan system to replace the payment of allowances and feeding grants given to trainees at public colleges of education.
The release of over GH¢ 67 million to public Colleges of Education to settle their six-month feeding arrears, has sparked the debate about the scrapping of feeding grants and allowances paid to teacher trainees.
A cross-section of the public is of the view, that since the colleges have been upgraded to university status, such grants should be scrapped. The allowance, which was replaced with the student loan scheme in 2016, was restored by the New Patriotic Party government in 2017.
In Authority of this Bohyeba Afriyie of Plan B Fm had an Eloquent interview with Mr. Mathew Nyaba an Educationist and a lecturer at the Gambaga college of Education on Ebanoosen and he stated that he is very much Aware that the student Allowance is facing A lot of challenges now but Replacing it with the loan system is not an option because the Allowance was inserted in the education course to encourage trainees and most of them enroll themselves because of the Allowances.
He went on to explain that the loan And the Allowance is literally the same thing the only difference is the fact that the loan is taken back years after but even the schools with the loan system are facing a lot of challenges .
He concluded that the Government should put long term measures in place to solve the challenges the trainees Are facing.
