According to a report by OnuaOnline, the Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the termination of its ballot printing contract with Yasarko Printing Press Limited.
Initially selected to print ballots for the Oti and Western North regions, Yasarko’s involvement has been abruptly ended following questions regarding its transparency and capacity.
The contract has since been reassigned to two other companies: Buck Press Limited and Acts Commercials Limited.
The EC’s decision to sever ties with Yasarko comes in response to persistent concerns raised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who had expressed skepticism regarding Yasarko’s qualifications for the crucial electoral task.
While the EC attributed the termination to a technical malfunction with Yasarko’s equipment, the NDC maintains that Yasarko’s alleged shortcomings could have undermined election integrity.
The initial awarding of the printing contract to Yasarko Printing Press Limited drew immediate scrutiny from the NDC.
As a major opposition party, the NDC raised concerns about Yasarko’s competence and impartiality, alleging that these deficiencies might have jeopardized the credibility of the election process.
In response, the EC released a statement on Friday, October 25, 2024, signed by Deputy Chairperson Samuel Tettey, clarifying that Yasarko’s contract was terminated due to a technical issue with one of its primary machines, not because of the NDC’s allegations.
