The Tema West Municipal Health Directorate has launched a public awareness campaign to educate residents on the monkeypox (mpox) disease, following the confirmation of four cases in Ghana.
In an exclusive interview, Nurse Ivy Asoku, Head Nurse for the Tema West Municipal Health Directorate, emphasized that mpox is a zoonotic disease primarily contracted from animals, but can also be transmitted from person to person.
“Mpox can spread through contact with an infected person’s bruises or cuts,” Nurse Asoku explained. “Symptoms include rashes, fever, body pains, and headaches.”
While there is currently no cure for mpox, Nurse Asoku stressed that preventive measures can be taken to avoid contracting the disease. “Regular handwashing and seeking medical attention immediately if symptoms occur are crucial in preventing the spread of mpox,” she advised.
The Tema West Municipal Health Directorate is taking proactive steps to educate the public and create awareness about mpox. Residents are encouraged to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones.
