This year’s 66th Independence Day Anniversary in the Greater Accra Region will be commemorated at the Tema Sports Stadium in Tema on Monday, March 6, 2023
The event will be hosted by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly in collaboration with the Regional Coordinating Council.
This will be the first time Tema is hosting the Greater Accra Region for the Independence Day Parade.
Speaking during a stakeholder meeting at the forecourt of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly ( TMA), today Wednesday February 22, 2023, Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey said the decision to hold the Independence celebration in Tema was as a result of President Akufo-Addo’s novelty of shuffling the function among the various regions.
He further stated that, in line with the president’s directive to to cut down on government budget expenditure, the Regional Coordinating Council have engaged diverse stakeholders and security councils to consider effective cost cutting mechanisms for the Regions celebrations of this year’s 6th March Independence celebrations.
Mr. Quartey also added that, after extensive engagement with key stakeholders, they have come to resolved on a centralized Independence anniversary Regional Day celebration to be held at the Tema Sports Stadium.
“The Greater Accra Regional Independence Day celebration will encapsulate the participation of 29 MMDAs in the Greater Accra. Some of the members of Council of state and all members of Parliament, MMDCEs and contingents across all MMDAs will be participating in this centralized Regional celebration” he said
The Regional Minister also outlined some major activities to be held in the Tema Metropolis as part of the Independence Day anniversary
“Some activities culminating into this year’s Independence celebration include an extensive ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ sanitation enforcement and clean up excessive, Free health screen and NHIS registration, Inter-MMDAs quiz (JHS level), anniversary indoor games, an anniversary boxing bout and anniversary football match” he stated.
He cautioned that about 500 task force members would be deployed to enforce the bye-law on the operation clean your frontage, stressing that those who refuse to join would be issued with a summon.
The Regional Minister also announced that unauthorized structures would be removed while abandoned vehicles and trucks along the roads would also be towed.
