Tema Motorway: Resident Engineer raises alarm over extortion at diversions

Tema Motorway Extension Project Will Be Tolled After Completion – Ofori-Atta

The Resident Engineer for the Accra–Tema Motorway reconstruction and expansion project, Kwabena Bempong, is cautioning motorists to be vigilant against individuals impersonating workers on the project.

Ing. Bempong, in an interview with Citi News on Thursday, January 22, alleged that some culprits have been identified wearing safety vests belonging to the project contractor, Maripoma Enterprise Limited, and extorting money from road users.

“This has come to our attention, and we are working on it. Some locals wear the vests of Maripoma, purporting to work with us, and position themselves at U-turns and diversions, especially at night, to collect money from motorists. We are monitoring the situation and have also informed the police, who are supporting us,” he stated.

Ing. Bempong urged road users to refrain from giving money to anyone, stressing that such actions are illegal and punishable by law.

“Motorists must be patient and avoid giving money to anyone claiming to be a staff member of the contractor. It is illegal, and both the giver and the taker can be prosecuted. We also advise motorists to avoid using uncompleted sections of the urban highway, as the removal of barriers compromises safety and affects our work,” he cautioned.

Meanwhile, he disclosed that the reconstruction and expansion works are progressing steadily and are currently about 35 per cent complete.
