Tema General Hospital Emergency Ward now a death trap – Residents cry out

Tema General Hospital Emergency Ward now a death trap – Residents cry out
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Tema Regional Government Hospital, according to some families whose relatives were admitted to the facility has bitterly complained that the emergency ward is in dire need of equipment and other essential resources and if immediate action is not taken by the government, the only regional hospital will bleed to death.

Speaking to a woman on condition of anonymity on Plan B FM’s late afternoon show EBAANOSEN hosted by Ohene Kinnah, the woman who had sent her father for treatment at the facility shared a horrible ordeal that the hospital lacks a standby plant (generator) to supply power to the entire facility, especially the emergency ward.

“I sent my father to the emergency ward recently and unfortunately the light went out, we stayed in darkness for two hours without any source of power, the hot atmosphere that emerged when the light went off compelled us and some nurses on duty that time to use folders to fan patients who were on admission because they were sweating profusely , in fact, it was a very disturbing experience, she said.

The hospital, which is a major health facility serving about three municipal assemblies including Tema Metropolis, records a monthly average of 100 major accident cases yet its emergency center is, most of the time, dysfunctional, a source within the hospital told PLAN B FM on condition of anonymity.

The source said the absence of a well-equipped emergency unit with modern facilities to handle most critical cases is seriously hampering the effective delivery of emergency care to victims, who are put in the same wards as other patients.

Families and victims who have experienced this devastating situation are appealing to the authorities especially the Ministry of Health to immediately come to the aid of the Hospital to uplift the facility with the required modern equipment to save lives.
