Tax Analyst and the Executive Director for Revenue Mobilisation Africa, Geoffrey Ocansey has described the comment made by NPP communicator Kofi Tonto as unfortunate and a clear indication that he lacks understanding of what taxes paid by citizens are being used for.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s late afternoon show EBAANOSEN hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mr. Ocansey has said that, “taxes are the government’s revenue for financing public spending, including building roads, school buildings, hospitals, and each tax is collected for a specific purpose, and most are collected according to a schedule rates, etc. With this issue, the communicator should have politely called on corporate individuals to partner with the government to construct roads instead of making such unfortunate comments about individuals who struggled to build their houses”
A communication team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kofi Tonto has taken a swipe at people who build luxurious houses and wait for the government to construct their roads.
According to him, the majority of these people don’t pay property rates but make the loudest noise about poor roads.
“You go to a new estate where people build $1M homes and $500,000 homes and wait for the government to construct their roads because they pay taxes?
Speaking on an Accra-based radio station, Kofi Tonto said though it is the responsibility of the government to fix roads, rich people can complement its efforts.

You can also help the government make Ghana a better place,” he noted.
Kofi Tonto stressed the need for Ghanaians to be patriotic and help the government build a better Ghana.
