Executive Director for Revenue Mobilisation Africa, Geoffrey Ocansey has reiterated the need for the government to reduce some tax levies imposed on businesses especially Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, and SMEs.
Speaking on Plan B Fm’s Ebanoosen hosted by Ohene Kinnah. He said ”these tax cuts will lessen the burden on businesses and also avoid tax invasion.
His comments come after the Chief Executive of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), Mark Badu-Aboagye, disclosed that some businesses and manufacturing firms are exploring ways to avoid paying more taxes, while others are considering shutting down.
According to the GNCI boss a lot of businesses are unhappy with recent steps taken by the Ghana Revenue Authority to collect taxes – a move they describe as harassment.
Mr. Ocansey urged the Ghan Revenue Authority GRA, to streamline the format used in taxing industries to make it ”more flexible and comprehensible”.
He also said looking at the pandemic and the economic crisis which is affecting businesses. Government must put measures in place to help stabilize them and the best way is to cut of some taxes.
He also bemoaned the delays in payment to contractors in the country. He called on government to make sure that payments to contractors are done on schedule to avoid putting them out of business.
