Tax Analyst and the Executive Director for Revenue Mobilisation Africa, Geoffrey Ocansey has backed ILAPI Government Wasteful Spending Report, 2022 and believe that every country develops through tax mobilization but sometimes how the taxes are being used also raises concerns about how some places are develop.
Speaking on Plan B Fm Late afternoon show ENBAANOSEN,with Ohene Kinnah in reaction to the Institute of Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI), a public research think-tank.
“Government wasteful spending crumbs of Government Waste Report, 2022. I remember this government said they will move this country from taxation to production, what has happened?”
He said the government is continuing to introduce taxes but has refused to do the needful by cutting down its expenditure
“In 2022 alone Ghs51 million fuel allocation at the presidency was too much but whilst you go to the develop countries, ministers use the train and other commercial transport why can’t we imitate them to make good use of our taxes.”
He stressed that the government’s inability to fight corruption and recoup the stolen and misappropriated funds from government appointees is also another aspect that has crippled the country’s finances.
The “Government Wasteful Spending Crumbs of Government Waste Report, 2022” was launched in Tema and revealed that, on average, the government wastes GHS0.70 out of every GHS1.00 received as revenue.
The poll was conducted across Ghana between August and November of this year with 2,000 respondents reached via ILAPI’s website, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp pages through random sampling
The poll showed that 92 percent of respondents believed that the government was wasting taxes, which influenced the citizens’ trust in the government.
The projects and policies the citizens perceived as most wasteful of tax included the National Cathedral, Presidential Traveling, Government Appointees, banking sector clean up, the fight against galamsey, Saglemi housing units, Ex-gratia, and Youth Employment Programmes such as YES and NABCO, among others.
ILAPI’s Executive Director, Mr. Peter Bismark Kwofie, stated that statistically, 90.5 percent of Ghanaians have lost trust in the government due to corruption and a lack of accountability and transparency in the implementation and execution of policies and programs.
