President Samia Suluhu Hassan Sunday has suspended the director general of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) over alleged embezzlement of 1.55 million dollars.
Suluhu Hassan announced her decision shortly after receiving audit reports for the TPA’s 2019/20 financial year indicating Deusdedit Kakoko had misappropriated some 3.6 billion Tanzanian Shillings (1.55 million dollars).
“I think it is time we suspend the TPA director general to pave the way for an in-depth investigation into this issue,” the president said in a live broadcast from State House in the capital Dodoma.
“We are duty-bound to make sure that public funds and properties are used for benefits of all Tanzanians,” she added.
Suluhu Hassan said she will also take “a critical look” at the management of other government enterprises, including national airlines Air Tanzania Company Limited.
Suluhu Hassan became the East African nation’s first female president on March 19, two days after former president John Magufuli from what government described as “heart failure.”
