The Tema Region of the Ghana National Fire Service is continuously educating the general public on safety measures to prevent domestic fire outbreaks in the region and the country as a whole.
Speaking on Plan B Fm morning show ‘Nkosuo Nsem’ with Nana Yaw Abrampa on the topic of “ELECTRICITY AND HOME APPLIANCE” with ADOII Willian Klebeti together with ADOII Ebenezer Gaizie.
They encouraged everyone to be cautious about to the use of home appliances.
ADOII Willian Klebeti said many of us live in homes with electrical hazards that can be very dangerous to our health and everyone needs to know how they can stay safe when dealing with these dangers at home.
“The electrical safety precautions at home are those things that we do to prevent injury from an electric shock and this includes all the different items in our houses, such as wiring the house with standard wires, light fixtures, and extension boards. It also covers appliances, ovens/stoves, iron kettles, and refrigerators.
One of the most common electrical hazards in homes is damaged power sockets, Particular caution should be taken with extension wires because they can easily get caught on furniture or walked over when it has placed under the carpet, which can lead to a short-circuit and electrical shock.
If you come across a worn-out wire that could pose an electric hazard, replace it immediately!
He said we should to keep electrical devices away from sources of water to avoid a potential shock hazard and also
electrical safety at home can be achieved in several ways, but it’s important to remember that safety doesn’t start and end with the electrical equipment, you also need to take care not to get water near anything plugged into an outlet or power extension board.
He stressed that some common household items which are prone to be exposed to water include irons, blenders, vacuum cleaners, and microwaves, these all pose potential risks when they are used after coming in contact with any amount of moisture.
ADOII Ebenezer Gaizie also said people should avoid overloading sockets
“By plugging more than one appliance into a socket an outlet at a time if it’s not too close to the other devices. However, this is dangerous for your home’s electrical system” he said
Overloading outlets can cause certain appliances (e.g., refrigerators) to shut off prematurely or stop working entirely due to overheating-related issues or can cause a fire outbreak.
He advised that one socket or outlet for one appliance is a good practice to avoid electric shock and explosion or fire outbreak, replacing broken plugs immediately and also we should not use sub-standard wires in our homes.
