An NDC communicator for the Ashaiman constituency, George Asabre, has attributed the persistent rise in food prices to the activities of middlemen who inflate prices between farmers and consumers. According to him, these intermediaries are the major cause of the current high cost of food in the country.
He emphasized the need for government to strengthen the National Buffer Stock Company to stabilize food prices, rather than allowing individuals to secure self-contracts that drain public funds as happened under previous administrations.
Mr. Asabre further suggested that government should purchase and store essential food items like maize during periods of abundance and release them onto the market when scarcity arises. This, he believes, will help curb the frequent hikes in food prices. He urged all stakeholders to prioritize the nation’s progress over personal or political interests.
