Stop pretending to be fighting galamsey when those involved are your appointees and party members – Assembly man to Prez

I won’t change my focus as President -Akufo-Addo

Assembly member for Wasa Nkonya Electoral Area, Mr. Opoku, has taken President Akufo-Addo to the cleaners, describing him as a failure in the fight against illegal mining.

The Assemblyman says the pledge by the president to put his presidency on the line was just a rhetoric.

To him, the president and his government have shown no seriousness in the fight against galamsey because several appointees and party supporters are among those engaging in the galamsey activities.

He made the remarks while speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM following the collapse of a mining pit in the area.

He opined that people who are engaged in illegal mining do so because the authorities who are supposed to deal with the problem are those supporting and engaging in the illegal act.

“Did you believe the president when he announced that he would put his presidency on the line to help deal with galamsey? The comments made by the president were not the truth. What the comments meant was that his party people would be allowed to engage in galamsey.

Those of you in Accra do not see the negative impacts of galamsey. Those of us in the rural part of the country can feel the impact. Whenever I hear him and his appointees say they will fight galamsey, I cringe and ask myself whether he fears God. I also wonder if serving God is something we should continue to do. The political leaders in this country are those supporting and engaging in galamsey.”

He went on to state that if the government was serious about fighting galamsey, it should not take more than one month.

He added that we cannot allow some greedy and selfish individuals to allow galamsey to continue at the expense of others.

He alleged that the MCE, the police, and other officials are aware of galamsey activities in the area, yet they have not done anything about it because they directly benefit from galamsey.
