Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has renewed his push for the swift passage of the Sports Fund Bill, describing it as a potential game-changer for Ghana’s economy and a vital pillar for the country’s sporting ambitions.
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, February 19, the Member of Parliament for Buem stressed that a well-structured sports financing system could significantly boost Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product while strengthening preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With the tournament set to kick off in June, Adams underlined the importance of adequate financial backing for the Black Stars’ campaign.
“Ghana has qualified for the World Cup; funding will be a key component for our participation, and it is in that spirit, Speaker, I make this statement,” he said.
He argued that while legislation lays the foundation, genuine commitment is what ultimately drives progress. Citing global figures, Adams noted that the sports industry is valued at more than $500 billion worldwide, yet contributes less than 0.5 percent to GDP in most African countries.
“Legislation alone does not finance sports; commitment does. Globally, the sports industry exceeds USD 500 billion in value, yet on our continent, sports contribute less than 0.5% to GDP in most countries, not because we lack talent, not because we lack passion, but because we have not yet built a financing system that matches our ambition.”
According to the minister, the proposed Ghana Sports Fund would establish a transparent and accountable framework to support infrastructure development, grassroots and school sports, elite athlete preparation, welfare systems and recreational activities across the country.
“The Ghana Sports Fund provides us with that system. It creates a transparent and accountable framework to support infrastructural development, school and grassroots sports, elite athlete preparation, welfare systems and recreation,” he added.
In a show of support, the National Investment Bank has donated GH¢100,000 to the fund. Adams himself, along with South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, also made personal contributions.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia for the 2026 tournament. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and wrapping up the group phase against Croatia on June 27.
