Former Director of Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has said former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, has breached the oath of secrecy as a member of the Council of State for making comments against the removal of Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice.
In an interview with TV3’s Joseph Ackah-Blay, September 3, 2025, Sophia Akuffo averred that Torkornoo was not given a fair trial. Among other things, the member of the Council of State noted that the allegations against Madam Torkornoo were not strong enough to warrant her removal from office.
Sophia Akuffo further said that the removal of Madam Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice has weakened the judiciary, describing her hearing as a “treason trial.”
“My honest and candid view is that this has so weakened the institution of the Judiciary.
“She did not get a fair trial. Even though it is not a trial strictly speaking, it was handled as though it were a treason trial,” Sophia Akuffo stated.
