Some residents in the Amasaman in Ga West Municipality have appealed to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to consider banning the use of mobile phones by nurses during working hours.

According to them, this will cause nurses to pay close attention while on duty and will also help save the lives of patients who require critical care and attention, particularly in emergencies.

The residents appealed to the Ghana Health Service on Plan B FM morning show ‘Nkosuo sem ‘, a victim who spoke with Nana Yaw Abrompah on condition of anonymity cited several instances of nurses on duty playing games, Tiktoking, whatsApping, etc on their phones while patients who needed critical attention were left unattended.

The residents claim that the attitude has resulted in the loss of many lives in the area and has prevented many people from accessing healthcare in the municipality’s government hospitals.

A midwife by the name Binney thinks otherwise. She explained that, the use of phones by nurses on duty aid  them to make their work easy.

“No doctor sleeps at the hospital if there is an emergency we use the phone to call them for assistance, we need to call those in charge or our colleagues for help when on duty.
Some of the nurses will use the phone otherwise which is not acceptable but we should also see the good aspect of it,” she added.
