The founder and leader of the All Peoples Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, has alleged that some presidential candidates for the December 7 general elections cannot travel to certain countries, including the US and UK.
According to him, this is because they have criminal record in those countries.
Speaking on Starr FM on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, monitored by GhanaWeb the businessman turned politician said he will name the said candidates, should they go ahead and file their nominations.
“I know of some presidential candidates who cannot travel to certain countries, and they are running for president. There are some of them who cannot travel to the US and UK. When they file, you will hear from me. I think that the EC or the government should get criminal records of every candidate. We should check the records of every candidate who is going to contest. This is my appeal.”
He suggested that there should be other criteria apart from age and sound mind to qualify people to contest to be president.
“So far, 11 independent candidates have picked forms to contest for the presidency, the 10 political parties are also coming. If all of them qualify, it will make the ballot paper have 21 candidates. It is only in this country that, aside from the constitutional requirement of one being 40 years and having a sound mind and good health, there’s no demand for criminal records of presidential candidates. There should be some elements, like criminal records, so that it will make the presidency an office that not everybody can qualify to occupy just by the age limit and mindset.”
