Depressed members of Small and Medium Scale Contractors [SMC] nationwide, a group working under the Ghana Highways Authority as weeders and cleaners on the highways, have threatened massive demonstration against the government over three years unpaid arrears
Speaking to Bohyeba Afriyie on Plan b fm’s Ebaanosen, Mr John Atta a member of the group stated emphatically that the government has intentionally turned deaf ears to their plea since many attempts to ensure payments of their arrears have proven futile, Perhaps calling on the authorities to sit up and pay them or face their wrath.
Mr. John Atta estimated that all attempts to reach the Minister, Hon. Amoako Attah to effect payments of their arrears have not been fruitful.
‘‘We cannot work for three years without payment. We have worked with the GHA as weeders and cleansers on the various highways and all gutters in the cities but the Ministry have turned back to the payment of our salaries, truly this has affected our standard of living since we are the breadwinners of our families. We seize this opportunity to call on the government to pay our arrears or we will hit the street to register our displeasure, “he stated.
He added,” We have been taken granted for long too long. We suspect something is wrong at the Ministry since no one is ready to pay attention to our plea. We are given the government some two weeks ultimatum to pay us our arrears. “”
In addition, he said that they have walked to Parliament to meet the authorities to address their concerns, but to no avail and he added that they cannot sleep in their homes because of the piled up deficits they owe some financial institutions.
“The most terrible situation is that we have met the Parliamentary select committee regarding our issue, but there is no reasonable feedback. We cannot sleep in our various homes because of the accumulated debts we owe some banks. Meanwhile, some of us have our children in the Universities and substance, so how do we cater for them and even pay our debts? We are through this medium calling on H. E Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo to come to our aid in order to help pay our arrears.”
