Former Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, has been released on bail following his detention by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) over the controversial $2M Sky Train scandal.
His defence lawyer, Ken Kuranchie, confirmed the development, stating that his legal team acted swiftly to secure his release while investigations continue.
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was picked up from his home on Sunday morning by NIB officials, who sought his cooperation in an ongoing probe into the disbursement of $2M to Africa Investor Holdings for the failed Accra Sky Train project.
Background: The Sky Train Scandal
The detention of Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi follows findings in a 2021 Auditor-General’s report, which flagged financial irregularities in the Sky Train project. The report revealed that the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) created for the project lacked an operational license, yet $2M was disbursed through GIIF under his leadership.
The project, announced in 2017, was envisioned to revolutionize Accra’s urban transport system, but it never materialized. In July 2023, the Minority in Parliament demanded answers, questioning why public funds were released without proper approvals or feasibility studies.
