Andrews Kwame Pianim, a celebrated Ghanaian business economist and investment consultant has said that it’s worrying that some media personalities have taken up appointment to be part of some boards of public institutions in the country.
According to him, the media is the fourth estate and is expected to be critical of the government in order to allow for accountability and transparency.
Therefore, there is the need for media personalities to reject any form of appointment from government.
“The media, the fourth estate, yours is to speak truth to power and I’ve told my friends who are in the media that if you’re easily dazzled by the glare of power don’t get close to power. I said it at our meeting the other time.
No media person in the fourth estate should be a member of the board of any public institution. How can you criticize a government you’re a part of? If you’re part of a think tank by criticizing policy, you should not be part of the policy making,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Asaase Radio.
Some known media personalities have taken up positions on the boards of some public institutions in the country.
Notable among them is Metro TV’s Paul Adom Otchere who is the Board Chairman for the Airport Company Limited. Prior to the current position, Paul was a member of the National Communications Authority board.
Kwame Sefa Kayi is also another media giant who has taken up a board member role at the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).
