Former Ghana international and ex-Black Starlets captain, Sebastian Barnes, has questioned the size of the Black Stars’ technical team, insisting that no head coach should work with more than four assistant coaches.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Weekend Sports Show hosted by Dan K. Pobi Okocha on Saturday, February 21, 2026, Barnes said he is not in support of what he described as a “20-member backroom staff” for the senior national team.
According to him, Black Stars head coach Otto Addo does not require such a large technical and support team as the country prepares for the upcoming World Cup.
Barnes argued that a competent and confident coach should not need an excessive number of assistants to achieve results.
“No coach should have more than four assistant coaches,” he stressed, adding that effectiveness is not determined by the size of the technical bench but by quality, clarity of roles, and leadership.
He suggested that streamlining the technical team could improve coordination, communication, and accountability within the squad.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions about the structure and composition of the Black Stars’ technical setup ahead of the global tournament.
