A member of the NPP, Sammy Darkwa, has called for intensified HIV awareness and education campaigns to help curb the spread of the virus following revelations that about 1,300 applicants in the recent security services recruitment exercise tested positive for HIV during mandatory medical screening.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem with Kofi Sekyi, Mr. Darkwa described the figure as alarming and urged the government and the Ministry of Health to take urgent steps to address the situation.
He also called on the government to increase funding for the Ghana AIDS Commission to enable it to intensify public education and awareness programmes on HIV and AIDS.
According to him, the Ghana AIDS Commission, like the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), is financially constrained and requires adequate support to effectively carry out its mandate.
Mr. Darkwa stressed that empowering these institutions with the necessary resources would significantly strengthen the country’s efforts to reduce HIV infections and improve public awareness.
