President Nana Akuffo Addo’s nominee for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Mr. Samuel Pyne risks possible rejection following the averred stance taken by the Assembly Members over the fifty million Ghana cedi judgement debt the Assembly owed over the years to some companies that dates back to former President J.A. Kufour era.
Snippets of information gathered from some Assembly Members who pleaded anonymous to OTECFMONLINE said the confirmation of Mr. Sam Pyne is deferred to Tuesday 5th October 2021 instead of September 30th 2021 due to “more homework ought to be done”.
The source indicated that the nominee met the forty elected Assembly Members and the Twenty Government Appointees at the Miklin Hotel in Kumasi last Sunday in the company of high ranking party apparatchiks to influence them to confirm him.
The source further said in spite of the presence of former Chairman of the NPP Mr. Peter Mark Manu, Hon. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, MP of Manhyia South and Energy Minister, and Mr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu former MP and Chairman of Bantama during the said meeting, the Assembly members stood their grounds with a demand that the Central government must as a matter of urgency sign an undertaking with the Assembly that the fifty million judgement debt would be taken care of before Mr. Sam Pyne would be confirmed.
The source speaking to Asante-Yeboah Benedict said, “the confirmation of Mr. Sam Pyne has been deferred to 5th October 2021 because of the 50 million judgement debt. We are demanding at least an undertaking from the Central government before any nominee would be confirmed. If the Assembly members go ahead to confirm Mr. Sam Pyne he would be a major casualty because he would not even get funds to undertake his programs. I know he is afraid of a possible defeat hence the call to defer the date of his confirmation to Tuesday. So we are still waiting for what would happen from now to Monday.”
Another source also hinted that the nominee has met Assembly Members of Manhyia South, Manhyia North, Bantama and Subin metros to woo them ahead of the confirmation. The source who is a first time Member to the Assembly said he was shocked to receive the news of the postponement. He explained “most of the members who were there during the era of Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi say the Central government must assure them with an undertaking before Hon. Sam Pyne is confirmed. I am told the Nana Addo led administration promised the Assembly Members then to pay the judgement debt but he has since failed to honour the promise so they are resolved now.”
Mr. Sam Pyne who is a teacher by profession, an incumbent Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP was a Board member of Kumasi Abattoir and when all hurdles are cleared sixty electorates made up of forty Assembly members and twenty Government Appointees would be expected to vote upon him.
