group of Civil Society organizations has called on the leaders of the two main political parties in the country, John Dramani Mahama and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to respect the peace pact they adopted prior to the elections.
In a statement condemning the numerous acts of violence by some supporters of the two parties and proffering viable solutions, the CSOs reminded the two parties about the demands of the pact they signed.
The 16 CSOs including Imani, ACEP, SEND Ghana and Youth Bridge Foundation wrote; “Remind the leaders of the two (2) major political parties to respect and fulfill the pledges they signed in the Presidential Election Peace Pact, which includes not just a commitment to promoting peaceful elections but also a pledge to resort to judicial resolutions to address all election disputes…”
“…Encourage political parties to tell their members to refrain from any violence, to stay calm, and to follow the laid down procedures provided to challenge election results…,” the statement dated December 15, 2020 further read.
As a means of dousing the growing tension around the outcome of the polls, the CSOs have also suggested a meeting between the EC and some stakeholders to find lasting solutions to issue.
“Finally propose that key stakeholders to the elections, should subsequently be convened by the EC to brainstorm and find permanent solutions to the gaps and errors that have emerged during these elections and to update existing electoral laws, policies and procedures with agreed recommendations such that we prevent a future re-occurrence of such challenges,” the statement added.
