REGSEC, Tema West Assembly begin demolition at Sakumo Ramsar site

REGSEC, Tema West Assembly begin demolition at Sakumo Ramsar site
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A joint demolition exercise by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Tema West Municipal Assembly has commenced in the Golf Course section of the Sakumo Ramsar Site, targeting unauthorised structures encroaching on the protected wetland.

The operation, which began today, forms part of renewed efforts by authorities to reclaim and preserve the ecologically sensitive area from increasing human activity. The Sakumo Ramsar Site, designated for its environmental significance, has in recent years faced mounting pressure from illegal developments.

Officials say the exercise is necessary to restore the integrity of the wetland and prevent further degradation, despite expected resistance from affected occupants. The move underscores growing concerns over environmental protection and enforcement of planning regulations in the Greater Accra Region.
