President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo, has expressed regret at the passing of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
A statement issued on Thursday, November 12, 2020, and signed by President Akufo-Addo said, “It is with great sadness to announce to the nation that the 1st President of the 4th republic, His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings, has joined his ancestors.”
President Akufo-Addo also offered commiserations from the government and the Ghanaian populace to his wife and former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the children and at large, the family of the late President in these times of sorrow.
All national flags shall fly at half-mast for the next seven (7) days in all parts of the country. In addition, there shall be seven days of mourning for the former President beginning Friday, 13th November to Friday, 20th November, 2020, the President declared in the statement.
President Akufo-Addo added that, the government would work closely with the family of the Late President Rawlings on the arrangement for a fitting state funeral for the late ex-President and while keeping the citizenry informed accordingly.
Concluding the statement, President Akufo-Addo wished the soul of ex-President Rawlings eternal rest. ”May his soul rest in perfect peace in the bosom of the Almighty until the last day of the resurrection when we shall meet again. Amen!”
The demise of former President Jerry John Rawlings occurred at 10:10 am on Thursday, November 12 2020, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was receiving treatment after a short illness. He was 73 years old.
