Rain stops play as Kotoko–Samartex clash set for Tuesday restart

Rain stops play as Kotoko–Samartex clash set for Tuesday restart

A thrilling Ghana Premier League showdown at the Baba Yara Stadium was brought to an abrupt halt on Monday, as heavy rains forced the abandonment of the clash between Asante Kotoko and FC Samartex 1996.

The Matchday 28 encounter was delicately balanced at 0-0 when referee Nathan Anafo stopped play early in the second half, ruling the pitch unfit for action after a sudden downpour left it heavily waterlogged.

Before the interruption, Kotoko had enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, probing for an opener, while Samartex stayed compact and disciplined at the back. Despite the intensity of the contest, neither side could find the breakthrough.

The game’s turning point, however, came from the skies. What started as a light drizzle quickly escalated into a torrential downpour, flooding large sections of the pitch and making conditions unplayable.

After inspecting the surface and consulting both captains, the referee made the call to suspend proceedings, prioritizing player safety.

Restart Set for Tuesday

Officials have confirmed that the remaining 45 minutes will be played on Tuesday at 9:00 AM, with the scoreline still 0-0.

Kotoko will be eager to capitalize on home advantage as they push for the title, while Samartex remain determined to strengthen their top-four ambitions when play resumes.

A Contest on Hold

The atmosphere had been electric before the weather intervened. Now, attention shifts to Tuesday morning in Kumasi, where an unfinished battle awaits its conclusion.
