Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has called on government to pull out of hosting the 2023 Africa Games which is expected to take off in August 2023 in Ghana.
According to Mahama, it is not advisable to commit resources to host the multi-sport event with the current economic conditions the country is facing.
Organisers of the competition are already in a race against time to complete the necessary infrastructure for the games before the deadline, but have continuously assured the various projects including the Borteyman sports complex will be completed on time.
“If it’s not too late, we can pull out of hosting the Africa Ganes, as it will severely stretch our precarious finances by hundreds of millions of cedis,” Mahama said in a speech Thursday night.
About $140 million has been earmarked for facilities for the games which is expected to host 54 countries who will be competing in 25 sporting disciplines.
