A Senior Lecturer at the Department of Religion and Human Development at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, is urging President John Dramani Mahama to make the controversial LGBTQ Bill a top priority on his government’s agenda.
The former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana appealed during an appearance on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM on April 1, 2026.
His comments come in response to the President’s recent indication that the bill is not currently among his top priorities. But for Rev Opuni-Frimpong, the issue carries deeper significance.
He argued that the debate is not merely political, but one that touches on the nation’s moral conscience, describing it as a “matter of the heart” that deserves urgent attention.
The lecturer also pointed to what he sees as a gap between past promises and present action.
He recalled that while in opposition, President Mahama had openly criticised the previous administration led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for failing to take decisive steps on the bill.
“For the sake of trust and confidence that Ghanaians had in him, the President must make the LGBTQ+ Bill a priority and honour his promise to Ghanaians,” he said.
Rev Opuni-Frimpong further noted that ahead of the elections, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assured Ghanaians that passing the bill would not be a difficult task if they were given the mandate to govern.
He stressed that many citizens are now watching closely to see whether those commitments will be fulfilled, including the President’s pledge not to delay in assenting to the bill if it is passed by Parliament.
Beyond politics and promises, he emphasised that any decision on the bill must reflect Ghana’s cultural values and societal norms, which he says remain central to how many citizens view the issue.
